Cairns Wellness Centre to Celebrate First Birthday

Written by Claire Willers, Communications Manager with integratedliving

More than 200 people to date have benefitted from Queensland’s first purpose-built Wellness Centre for seniors – just a year since it opened in Cairns.

The Centre was opened as part of leading health service provider integratedliving’s focus on addressing the challenges experienced by older people in rural, regional and remote communities, to live full and independent lives, such as staying active, mentally well and connected to others socially.

Research shows that in regional, rural and remote communities, 75 percent of people aren’t getting enough exercise and more than 50 per cent of people have one or more chronic illnesses.

For the past year, nearly 200 people each month have been using the Centre’s state-of-the-art Wellness Gym, and variety of services including; exercise and yoga classes, massage therapy, occupational therapy services, allied health treatments and the ‘Staying Healthy Eating Well’ meals service.

Now, integratedliving, are inviting the community to join them to celebrate the Centre’s first birthday at a special morning tea event and to recognise all that has been achieved in the past year.

Catherine Daley, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our focus at integratedliving is to provide equitable access to health and wellbeing services to older Australians in these areas and integratedliving’s Wellness Centre in Cairns is helping to achieve that.

“Staying mobile plays an integral part in remaining independent and healthy as we age.”

The integratedliving Wellness Centre™ at Cairns is also a hub to socialise and access award-winning Wellness for Independence® programs, such as Memory Wellness, Digital Wellness and Diabetes and Foot Wellness. These programs focus on the prevention and management of chronic conditions for older people. It has also introduced a regular ‘Let’s have a conversation’ morning tea event, where members come together to discuss and learn about key wellbeing topics.

Ms Daley, added: “The services at our new Wellness Centre help customers build their muscle strength, improve their balance and co-ordination and get their confidence back so they can get out and about in their community and keep doing the things they love.

“We know that remaining socially connected can be a challenge as people get older. Friends and family may move away and meeting new people can be quite daunting.

“For this reason we have made our new Wellness Centre a comfortable and relaxing place where people can meet others of a similar age. Our Wellness for Independence® programs also bring like-minded people together and help them stay connected to family and friends through the use of iPads and online technology.”
