71 years together: A love story from our Activity Centres

Written by Lisa Page, Activity Centre Coordinator with integratedliving

A couple's enduring story of cooperation, humour and family.

For Kevin and Elizabeth, the secret to a long and happy marriage can be summed up in one word: cooperation. After 71 years since they tied the knot, their story is a beautiful reminder of what can grow from shared values, mutual respect and a sweet smattering of humour.

Where it all began

Their story starts in the country town of Narrandera NSW, where Elizabeth and Kevin attended the same school. Kevin was just one year ahead.

But it wasn’t until a local dance brought them together that their romance truly began.

One moment stands out clearly in Elizabeth’s memory during their early courtship. The young couple went to the movies and Elizabeth was under strict instructions from her mum to be home by 10:30 PM. The film, however, didn’t finish until 11:00 PM.

In a small but meaningful act of rebellion, she stayed to watch the ending with Kevin. That choice cemented what's become a lifelong partnership.

On 28 December 1954, Kevin and Elizabeth made it official. They recently celebrated 71 years of marriage and a family that has grown to include three children, six grandchildren and four great‑grandchildren.

When asked how they’ve made it work for more than seven decades, they laugh and say they simply take turns being the boss. Kevin may be known for offering the occasional kitchen critique, but there’s one meal he’ll never question - Elizabeth’s classic baked dinner.

Our Activity Centre community

Kevin and Elizabeth are much‑loved members of our Activity Centres. They say they come along to enjoy the company, connect with others, and spend time with our caring staff. During activities, you will usually find them pursuing their own passions  Kevin loves a good game of cards, while Elizabeth prefers to get creative with painting and craft.

Don’t let the romance fool you, Kevin and Elizabeth still enjoy a bit of friendly rivalry when the time arises. They cheer for rival NRL teams. Elizabeth supports South Sydney while Kevin backs the Manly Sea Eagles. The couple won the Activity Centre's footy tipping competition last year. They're ready to defend their title in 2026, but agree their winning strategy is simple: “It’s all just guesswork!”

We are honoured to have Kevin and Elizabeth as part of our community. Their warmth, humour and enduring love inspire everyone around them. Here’s to another wonderful year of love, cooperation and laughs for this incredible duo.
