Finding Joy, Friendship and Purpose: Sylvia’s Story with integratedliving

Written by Flo Norton, Digital Marketing Coordinator with integratedliving

92-year-old Sylvia has lived a life marked by resilience and kindness.

Born in April 1933 in the United Kingdom, her early life was marked by the hardship of wartime.

“Having been evacuated at six years old with my sister who was four years old, to anyone who had a spare room, without vetting or anything," Sylvia said. "We were billeted with a very, very elderly lady, Mrs Cook. She already had two other evacuees, so it was four of us in one bed. It was not a happy place.”

The war created a sense of disconnection for Sylvia. “Being back and forwards between home and being evacuated ruined relationships with our parents,” she reflects.

But Sylvia moved forward. She built a fulfilling life, working 21 years at the University of East London before continuing to serve others in charity shops, hospitals and a women’s clinic.

After relocating to Australia, Sylvia eventually discovered integratedliving.

She recalls how she began using integratedliving’s services. “I started with integratedliving over 11 years ago," Sylvia said. "I used to go on social trips with a lovely driver Craig.

It was really good as I had just moved into the area and knew nothing about it but with Craig at the wheel, and his commentary on the way pointing out places of interest, it was so enjoyable. I just loved those trips.”

When the pandemic paused these outings, Sylvia feared the loss of that community. Then a call from integratedliving's Kate changed everything.

“I had a telephone call from Kate, asking if I would be interested in coming into the Centre at Raymond Terrace. I said I wasn’t sure, but Kate said come and see and give it a try. Well I did and it is one of the best things I have done.”

From that first Tuesday, Sylvia felt at home. “First day I was picked up in the bus with Craig so that was a good start. It was good to see him after so long. That first Tuesday I didn’t know anyone there but started chatting to a very quiet lady, Vicki. I went the next Tuesday and have never looked back.”

Sylvia has now been attending the Centre for more than two years. “I still sit next to Vicki, and we have become good friends. There is Dottie, Jan, Lorraine, Brigitte, Audrey, dear Betty and more, and not forgetting the fellows."

"I enjoy every minute. I’ve made so many friends," Sylvia said.

Each Tuesday begins with a warm welcome, tea or coffee, crumpets or a snack, followed by activities like chair exercises, quizzes and craft sessions.

“I just love craft work but I’m useless at it,” Sylvia said, then expressing her gratitude for the Activity Centre staff. “Both Bec and Julie have given me confidence to have a go.”

She also credits Kate, Craig, Julie, Bec and Julie Ann for creating a warm and inclusive space within the Centre.

To others who may be feeling isolated or hesitant, Sylvia offers this:

"People don't need to be on their own. No matter if they have a disability or if they need a social life, you can find what you need. I found it here and I look forward to Tuesdays catching up and having fun."
