Mary's path to independence and joy after many early challenges
A life of resilience, love and community.
Mary’s life is a testament to resilience, love and the power of community. At 81, she continues to live independently in New South Wales, supported by her family and the services of integratedliving, while finding joy in the friendships and activities at our Activity Centre.
Born in the UK, Mary’s childhood took a dramatic turn when, at just nine years old, she was sent by nuns to Australia for adoption. Raised in Sydney, Mary grew up far from her birth family. Decades later, at 56, Mary’s story was featured in the 60 Minutes Special 'The Lost Children'. In a deeply emotional reunion, she travelled to Ireland and reconnected with her mother, who had believed Mary was sent to America. During those four weeks, Mary met nine siblings she never knew existed. Though the lost years could never be replaced, she treasures the time they shared.
In 1973, Mary married Peter, the love of her life, and together they raised two daughters. She worked as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN), volunteered and devoted herself to her family. Tragedy struck in 1997 when a car accident left her widowed and unable to continue working. Yet Mary’s spirit remained strong, she dedicated the next 20 years to volunteering at a Community Centre, giving back to others in the way she had chosen to live the rest of her life – with compassion and purpose.
Today, Mary embraces life with remarkable energy. She attends church regularly, knits 'Trauma Teddies' for the Red Cross, cares for neighbourhood cats and delights in her favourite Nora Roberts novels. Despite a dementia diagnosis, Mary continues to thrive, maintaining strong social connections and engaging in activities that bring her joy.
At the Activity Centre, Mary is known for her warmth and enthusiasm. She shares stories from her extraordinary life, contributes to the book exchange and enjoys gardening, chatting and group games where her competitive spirit shines. Her love of playing cards even led to a memorable match with our CEO, Nick, during his recent visit.
A recent outing brought tears of joy when Mary danced with one of our Activity Officers, recalling cherished memories of dancing with her late husband. Through her resilience and the support of her community, Mary continues to shine brightly, proving that life can remain purposeful, joyful and deeply connected at every stage.
Mary’s story reflects integratedliving’s commitment to supporting older people in living meaningful and independent lives. Thank you for sharing your moving story and delightful self with us Mary.
