Cairns team talks Support at Home with North Queensland Local Network
A local perspective on the Support at Home transition.
The Cairns Wellness Centre recently welcomed representatives from the Commonwealth Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s North Queensland Local Network to hear firsthand how the new Support at Home (SAH) reforms are affecting providers and older people locally.
North Queensland Local Network Director, Assistant Director and Network Officer met with Cairns Wellness Centre team members, Care Partner Simone and Wellness Centre Coordinator Matt.
The delegation visited while two classes were underway, giving them a firsthand look at the Centre’s vibrant atmosphere and the strong community connection among clients.
“They commented on the community that’s been created here and how great it was to see such positive work happening,” Simone said.
Matt agreed, describing the Centre as “vibrant and buzzing” from the moment the delegation arrived.
The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the realities of implementing Support at Home, including AT-HM funding changes, wait times and the challenges providers and clients are experiencing during the transition.
Simone said the Department team was engaged and keen to hear honest feedback.
“They asked open questions about the pain points and what was working. It was great to have that opportunity to share our experiences.”
Matt said the discussion was “really constructive and informative”, with the team openly considering suggestions and feedback.
The delegation also heard about the Centre’s strong client retention, with many older people choosing to continue attending after their funding ends, either by self-funding or through Support at Home funding.
“A high percentage of clients choose to continue attending,” Simone said. “It shows the value they place on the Centre and the support they receive.”
The visit highlighted the important role the Cairns Wellness Centre plays in supporting older people to stay active, build strength and create social connections.
The visit was a valuable opportunity to share local insights and perspectives, contributing to conversations about reforms that support better outcomes for older people across the region.
