New grant enables more seniors to thrive at Cairns Wellness Centre

Written by Alice Evans, Head of Innovation, Growth and Strategy with integratedliving

integratedliving is proud to announce a grant that will boost our capacity to serve seniors at the Cairns Wellness Centre.

We are thrilled about our recent success in securing funding from Grant Round 121 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to enable the purchase of additional specialised HUR gym equipment. With this new equipment, even more seniors will have the opportunity to attend our individualised and group exercise programs, designed to improve their physical wellbeing and enhance their quality of life.

Currently, the Cairns Wellness Centre runs 38 classes per week, serving 276 clients with a range of tailored fitness and wellness services. However, there are still 150 seniors on our waiting list, eager to join our programs. Thanks to this grant, we will be able to offer an additional 10,400 individual sessions annually, increasing our total to 30,160 individual health and wellness sessions per year. This will provide significant benefits to both the seniors we serve and the broader Cairns community, promoting healthier lifestyles and fostering a sense of community and connection.

This is important as over the last 12 months our dedicated Exercise Physiologists' have worked closely with seniors to assess and track improvements in their overall health. Through validated assessment tools, we have seen noticeable improvements in mobility, gait speed, balance, and cardiovascular fitness - key areas of concern for seniors looking to maintain their independence as they age. Beyond the physical health benefits, our in-person classes have also provided seniors with vital social connections, reducing feelings of loneliness and encouraging greater engagement within the community.

Cairns Wellness Centre Coordinator, Simone expressed her excitement about the recent grant awarded to the Cairns Wellness Centre.

"We are so excited that integratedliving has received this grant. The best thing about this grant is the opportunity it provides for the Cairns Wellness Centre to grow and service more seniors in our community.

For a long time Cairns has been operating at a high capacity, meaning longer wait times for new clients to come into the centre. The grant will facilitate the purchase of new equipment and additional resources for the centre which will reduce wait times and get more members of our Cairns community on track with their fitness and wellbeing."
