Celebrating community spirit at our Activity Centre Commonwealth Games
A celebration of community, fun and a healthy dose of friendly rivalry.
We recently brought the spirit of the Commonwealth Games to our Activity Centres. What unfolded was a week filled with laughter, teamwork, patriotism and some surprisingly competitive moments from our clients and team members.
Team vs Team: The battle of the nations
To set the tone for the week, our team members proudly represented four newly formed nations. Each one was a playful twist on our Activity Centre locations. Gorokastan flew the flag for Gorokan, Goslovakia marched in from Gosford, Raymondia showcased the competitive spirit of Raymond Terrace and Woylandia brought the coastal charm of Woy Woy.
Each day at 12 noon sharp, these emerging nations gathered for battle. They raced against the clock to tackle trivia challenges, earn points and secure medals for their beloved homeland. The rooms erupted with cheers, laughter and plenty of friendly rivalry as teams fought for glory and bragging rights, in the most entertaining way possible.
The energy was electric. Team members gathered around, cheering each other on, debating answers and celebrating every win. And yes - it quickly became clear that Raymondia takes competition very seriously with officials keeping a close eye on the many 'non‑sanctioned' events mysteriously organised by Activity Officer Renee.
Bringing the games to life
Our Activity Officers deserve enormous credit for transforming the idea into a fully immersive experience. Their creativity and dedication meant every client could participate regardless of suitability. Modified versions of classic events were expertly designed to be fun, safe and inclusive.
Clients took part in:
- The hammer throw (with soft and safe equipment).
- Shotput adapted for all mobility levels.
- Javelin featuring foam javelins and plenty of cheering.
- Swimming races creatively reimagined for land-based competition.
- Track events complete with dramatic finishes.
- Table tennis, which was a crowd favourite.
- Boxing safely adapted and full of laughs.
The atmosphere across the Centres was buzzing. Clients embraced the chance to represent their new homeland, cheer on their peers and enjoy the thrill of competition in a supportive and joyful environment.
Patriotism, pride and podium moments
No Commonwealth Games would be complete without medal ceremonies and ours did not disappoint. Clients proudly stepped onto the podium to receive their medals, accompanied by applause, photos and the playing of the Australian national anthem.
These moments weren’t just fun; they were meaningful. They encouraged confidence, connection and celebration, and reminded everyone of the power of shared experiences.
A massive well done to all our Activity Officers for their hard work, imagination and commitment to our clients' wellbeing and enjoyment. Their efforts turned a simple idea into a celebration that brought immense joy and renewed energy to clients and team members alike. Their creativity didn’t just make the Games possible, it made them unforgettable for all involved.
The Commonwealth Games may have wrapped up for another four years, but the sense of connection, joy and community spirit will continue to shine across our Activity Centres.
From festive celebrations like Christmas in July to meaningful cultural experiences such as Walking Together: Our Journey of Connection, our teams are always creating opportunities for our clients to come together, try something new and share special moments that mean something to all participants and witnesses.
These events remind us that every activity, big or small, strengthens the bonds that make our Centres such vibrant and welcoming places for everyone to belong.
