Newcastle Wellness Centre To Celebrate First Birthday

Written by Joanne Isaac, Senior Manager (Communications and Campaigns) with integratedliving

More than 150 people have benefitted from Newcastle’s first purpose-built Wellness Centre for seniors – just a year since it opened.

The Centre was opened as part of leading health service provider integratedliving’s focus on helping older people in rural, regional and remote communities to live full and independent lives, by staying active, mentally well and socially connected to others.

Research shows that in regional, rural and remote communities, 75 percent of people aren’t getting enough exercise and more than 50 per cent of people have one or more chronic illnesses.

For the past year, more than 100 people each month have been using the Centre’s state-of-the-art Wellness Gym, and accessing a variety of services including; exercise and yoga classes, massage therapy, allied health treatments and the ‘Staying Healthy Eating Well’ meals service.

Now, integratedliving, is inviting the community to join them to celebrate the Centre’s first birthday at a special morning tea event to recognise all that has been achieved in the past year.

Catherine Daley, Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our focus at integratedliving is to provide equitable access to health and wellbeing services to older Australians in rural, regional and remote areas and our Wellness Centre in Newcastle is helping  achieve that.

“Staying mobile and active plays an integral role in remaining independent and healthy as we age.”

The Wellness Centre by integratedliving® at Newcastle is also a hub to socialise and access award-winning Wellness for Independence® programs, such as Memory Wellness, Digital Wellness and Diabetes and Foot Wellness. These programs focus on the prevention and management of chronic conditions for older people. A regular ‘Let’s have a conversation’ morning tea event has also been introduced, where members come together to discuss and learn about key wellbeing topics.

Ms Daley, added: “The services at our new Wellness Centre help clients build their muscle strength, improve their balance and co-ordination and get their confidence back so they can get out and about in their community and keep doing the things they love.

“We know that remaining socially connected can be a challenge as people get older. Friends and family may move away and meeting new people can be quite daunting.

“For this reason we have made our new Wellness Centre a comfortable and relaxing place where people can meet others of a similar age. Our Wellness for Independence® programs also bring like-minded people together and help them stay connected to family and friends through the use of iPads and online technology.”
