April at a Glance: Festivities, Friendship, and Honour Across Our Activity Centres

Written by Rachelle Thomas, Activity Centre Team Leader with integratedliving

As we welcome the start of May, it’s hard to believe how quickly the year is flying by. April was a truly memorable month across our Activity Centres, filled with laughter, creativity, reflection and community spirit.

With Easter festivities bringing colour and joy, and ANZAC Day reminding us of the importance of remembrance, our clients were at the heart of every moment - sharing stories, enjoying new activities and embracing the opportunity to connect.

Doggie Dates at Gorokan

Easter celebrations were in full swing at Gorokan, beginning with themed crafts and a visit from Doggie Dates that brought smiles and warm moments in the garden. The day continued with a festive BBQ lunch, a raffle - congratulations to Joan, Rod and Geoff. The centre even had a visit from Mrs. Whippit’s ice cream truck.

Later in the month, the centre honoured ANZAC Day with heartfelt tributes. Clients and staff shared personal mementos, including war medals and a WWII-era "Application for a Date with an RAAF Member." Robert movingly spoke of his father's service and Nicole presented a thoughtful video tribute.

Our Activity Officers, Mary-Ann and Rebecca, kept spirits high all month with engaging crafts, music and movement. Gorokan was also delighted to welcome their newest client, Lois.

Easter Fun at Gosford

Over at Gosford, Easter creativity was in full bloom. Clients crafted beautiful, handmade cards using colourful paper and collage techniques - each one unique and made with care. They also painted delicate watercolour birds, now proudly displayed on our “Creativity Tree.”

Joyful movement filled the room during a fun scarf dancing session to classic melodies, and the light-hearted mood continued with a friendly paper aeroplane contest that had everyone cheering each other on.

We also had the pleasure of hosting an Open Day in partnership with Carer Gateway, welcoming visitors and showcasing the meaningful activities and vibrant community we have built. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with new faces and share the positive impact of our programs.

Meaningful Tributes at Woy Woy

At Woy Woy, Easter brought colour and creativity to every corner. Clients decorated foam eggs with glitter and paint, placing them into handmade nests that added a festive feel to the centre. They also got crafty with egg cartons to create bunny-themed cards, which were gifted to family and friends.

Later in the month, we paid tribute to ANZAC Day through meaningful storytelling, reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of past generations. Client Betty shared touching stories about her father and uncle, while the group honoured their memory with a moment of silence, a game of two-up and the creation of a stunning poppy wreath. Traditional ANZAC biscuits were shared as we remembered those who served.

Smiles at Raymond Terrace

Raymond Terrace was full of laughter and warm moments during April. In the lead-up to Easter, clients participated in daily lucky door prize draws, and an egg-citing egg hunt in the sensory garden brought smiles all around.

We celebrated milestone birthdays, including Sylvia’s remarkable 92nd - she remains active and medication-free - and Rob’s 70th, both of whom continue to enrich our centre’s spirit.

As the weather cools, clients are staying active with chair yoga, guided movement, and even a chicken dance or two. We were also excited to welcome Rachel back from her travels in South Africa!

Looking ahead, we’re excited to come together across all our centres for the Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 22nd May. This special event will raise funds for the Cancer Council, and we encourage everyone to bring a friend and join us for a day of connection, games, prizes, and delicious treats. It's a beautiful opportunity to support a great cause while celebrating the spirit of community that thrives across our centres. We look forward to seeing you there!
