How in-home support helped Catherine's health, home and happiness

Written by Liz Moore, Communications Partner with integratedliving

Working together is Catherine's solution to staying healthy in her beloved home.

At her home nestled in Queensland's mountainous coastal hinterland, Catherine has discovered that life’s challenges are more manageable with the right support.

After experiencing multiple health challenges, including strokes, Catherine sought out integratedliving on her friend’s, a nurse, recommendation. Embracing these new support options, Catherine has been able to regain the confidence that she will be able to stay in the home she loves.

“integratedliving has assisted me by helping me get unscrambled post strokes, and to get structure and organisation in my home life,” Catherine said. “And they source workers that slot in really well in my household.

“I don't necessarily need people to do the work for me. I want them to work with me, to help me, to save me going around in circles.”
Catherine accesses health services to help manage her health conditions, including social work, physiotherapy and nursing support, as well as Digital Dialogue to improve her online skills.

Catherine also receives domestic assistance around the house, and maintenance around the garden. The support Catherine receives is as much about overcoming mental barriers as it is getting things done.

This includes meal preparation to suit Catherine’s dietary needs and dedicating time to get her beloved home and cherished garden in order with the help of skilled support workers.
“With leisure lifestyle, they help me to do some of the jobs I find onerous and have mental blocks about implementing,” Catherine said. “The lawn mowing and gardening is very valuable to me.

“The place was pretty wild beforehand, and bit by bit, it's coming into order,” she said. Catherine practised permaculture for many years and is a part of a local crop-swapping group.

“integratedliving has made a big difference in the quality of my life. Like here now, and I can see onto the future, I’m going to be able to stay here. It has a lot of character, this place I live in,” Catherine said. “It feels like with integratedliving’s home-care support, I’m going to be able to keep staying in my own place where I can have my chooks.

Tips for staying on top of your garden:

  • Net or shade your edible crops
  • Weed – section by section so it’s not overwhelming
  • Mulch to help prevent weeds
  • Remove crops that are spent
  • Rake paths
  • Remove unnecessary wooden stakes, old unused pots and labels that aren’t needed
  • Work in one section of the garden at a time. For example, the veggie patch or the front hedge.
  • Prepare soil before planting
