Bringing joy to clients

Written by Samantha, Activity Officer with integratedliving

This article, written by one of our team members, forms part of our Wave of Thanks campaign. From the 18 May to 1 June in 2020 we asked all clients, their family and friends and the wider public to join us in giving a ‘Wave of Thanks’, celebrating the determination and spirit of our frontline care workers.

I’m an Activity Officer on the Central Coast in New South Wales and I'm doing a lot of respite work at the moment. I really enjoy this, and getting to know my clients and their families much better.

Barry is one of my lovely respite clients. Barry really enjoys dancing, music, local history and reminiscing with some memory cards. Barry was once a champion line dancer, so he really enjoys the records I bring and play at his house with my mobile record player. The music makes a huge difference and I use it before quizzes or other activities and the results are amazing.

Our lovely client John (right) is British, but has lived in Australia for many years. Living in London in the 60's, John has many stories. We do a lot of reminiscing and I bring records of his favourite band, The Beatles, which in turn brings back other memories for him. John is a retired journalist, so we also play a fun newspaper headline game, called 'Man bites dog'! John also enjoys word games and quizzes and loved the old reel to reel tape player I brought in for him, as he had one as a teen.
